Save the Seraphs Gala Raises $95,000 for The Seraph’s Fund
Fund close to $1 million needed for Mater Dei Prep

On Saturday, March 21, the Save the Seraphs Gala raised $95,000, bringing The Seraph’s Fund total to $962,000, very close to the $1 million needed by April 15 to ensure Mater Dei Prep’s future.

The event, sponsored by the Harper Family, took place at Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands. Over 450 alumni, current families and friends of Mater Dei Prep were in attendance. The night featured an online auction, a gift raffle, dinner and dancing. Joe Rapolla (MD ’79), Chair of the Music & Theater Arts Department at Monmouth University and his band the Perfect Square provided hours of entertainment.

Maria Buzzanco, The Seraph’s Fund fundraising committee chair and chairperson of the gala, thought the event was “a fantastic success. We were overwhelmed by the support from the entire Mater Dei Prep community. So many alumni returned to show their support for Mater Dei Prep, including Gerard Harper, class of ’71, a sponsor of the event, and one of our most famous graduates, Brian Williams, class of ’77. The atmosphere of the evening was like a giant reunion; the event rekindled the Seraph spirit and made it obvious how special and important Mater Dei Prep is to its alumni and the Bayshore area.”

Late last week The Seraph’s Fund received confirmation of their 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Currently the fund’s $962,000 consists of over $350,000 in donations and another $610,000 in binding pledges. This week the fund will be contacting those who have made pledges to turn their monetary guarantees into donations. The fund anticipates hitting the $1 million mark ahead of schedule, proving Mater Dei Prep’s financial viability.

The next fundraising event for the Save the Seraphs campaign is a benefit concert at Count Basie Theater on Thursday, April 30th. The show features "Brian Kirk & the Jirks" with special guests "The Magic Taxis." Tickets go on sale Friday, March 27th at noon through the Count Basie Theatre box office. A limited number of VIP seats with a pre-show cocktail party sponsored by Buona Sera are available.

Mater Dei Prep hopes to open in September as a private, Catholic institution, financially and operationally separate from St. Mary’s parish. The Seraph’s Fund will operate as an endowment fund for the school with a separate Board of Trustees overseeing budgeting and development. Board members and volunteers are currently completing the steps necessary to realize this new business model which will need approval from the Bishop.
