Seraphs in Middletown
The Seraph’s Fund acknowledges there was ambiguity in the announcement below regarding developments in the effort to preserve Mater Dei Prep’s future. While no provision or plan is in effect, members of The Seraph’s Fund are thankful for the opportunity they were given to meet with the Diocese of Trenton on Monday, March 2. At the meeting, Diocesan officials indicated that if a financial analysis by The Seraph’s Fund proved that a private institution were financially feasible, the Diocese would be open to exploring the proposal. On Wednesday, March 4, to aid in the financial analysis, the Diocese provided a list of business issues to be addressed, as well as academic requirements. It is anticipated that when this analysis is completed, The Seraph’s Fund will return with a fully developed plan that will be reviewed by Diocesan officials. Over the last two days the foundation has mobilized around the work needed and understands that substantial funds must be raised before a plan can be submitted for consideration.
Since the announcement on February 3, 2015 of Mater Dei Prep’s closing due to financial difficulties, there have been many ongoing efforts to save the school.
The Seraph's Fund, a New Jersey, Nonprofit Corporation with 501(c)(3) status pending, was formed to fund Mater Dei Prep. Its officers are Jim Shaw (’76), Christina O’Neal (’89) and Mike Kress (’93). This group worked closely with a steering committee and other volunteers to create a plan for Mater Dei Prep’s future.
This plan envisions Mater Dei Prep as a private Catholic school, governed by a Board of Directors and a school president who will work together to oversee all aspects of Mater Dei Prep. Ecclesiastical guidance will continue from the Diocese of Trenton. Both the board and the president will work in conjunction with the endowment team at The Seraph’s Fund to ensure Mater Dei Prep is governed with complete financial transparency.
Earlier this week, St. Mary’s Parish and the Diocese of Trenton agreed with The Seraph’s Fund’s plan. Randy MacDonald (’74) will lead the new Board of Directors and the search for a school president is underway.
Mater Dei Prep must still reach a significant monetary goal to ensure the opening of its doors in September. Pledges to The Seraph’s Fund may be made at www.seraphfund.org. This website also contains updated information about the progress of the foundation and upcoming Save the Seraphs events.
