The Seraph’s Fund’s Save the Seraphs campaign has surpassed the $1,000,000 mark three weeks ahead of the April 15 deadline. Formed shortly after the announcement February 3 that Mater Dei Prep would close its doors because of financial difficulties, The Seraph’s Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, now looks to embark on Its longer term goal: building an endowment fund to “Support the Seraphs” for the next 50 years and beyond.

Jim Shaw (’76), a trustee of The Seraph’s Fund and Chair of the Save the Seraphs campaign, called the milestone a “major victory for the future of Mater Dei Prep. We believe this moves us beyond financial stability for next year and allows us to continue the cycle of fundraising to ensure long-term sustainability.”

The Seraph’s Fund’s objective is to open Mater Dei Prep in September as a private, Catholic institution, financially and operationally separate from St. Mary’s parish. The Seraph’s Fund will operate as an endowment fund; there will be a separate Board of Trustees to provide fiscal and operational stewardship over the school. Board members and volunteers are currently completing the steps necessary to realize this new business model which will need final approval from the Bishop and the Diocese of Trenton.

Many factors contributed to the success of the Save the Seraphs campaign, including a recent gala and auction event which raised $95,000, and donations from alumni, current families, businesses and supporters in the Middletown area and from across the country.

The Seraph’s Fund’s next fundraising event is a benefit concert at Count Basie Theater on Thursday, April 30. The show features "Brian Kirk & The Jirks" with special guests "The Magic Taxis." Tickets go on sale Friday, March 27 at noon through the Count Basie Theatre box office. A limited number of VIP seats with a pre-show cocktail party sponsored by Buona Sera are available. For more information about The Seraph’s Fund and upcoming fundraising events or to make a donation to The Seraph’s Fund, please visit
