Save the Seraphs Campaign off to a Strong Start
Many fundraising events planned during March

Middletown –The campaign to keep Mater Dei Prep open and prove its long-term viability is off to a strong start. Created as an initiative of The Seraph’s Fund, the goal of SavetheSeraphs.org is to raise $1 million by April 15. On February 3, Mater Dei Prep’s Executive Director and St. Mary Parish Pastor, Rev. Jeff Kegley, announced the school’s doors would close on June 30 due to financial difficulties.

After being granted a 60-day extension to raise the needed funds, over 1,000 alumni, parents, students and friends attended a kick-off meeting on February 6. Since then a group of alumni has worked to create The Seraph’s Fund, a New Jersey nonprofit corporation, to manage donations and fund an endowment that will allow Mater Dei Prep to continue its mission. Currently, the Board of Trustees of The Seraph’s Fund are Jim Shaw (MD ’76), chairman of the Save the Seraphs Campaign, Michael Kress (MD‘93) and Christina Hardman O’Neal (MD ’89).

Due to the passion and energy of the Seraph community, to date over $427,000 has been pledged to The Seraph’s Fund. Many have taken the signature “Seraph Pledge,” promising $1,000 a year for the next four years to ensure Mater Dei Prep’s future financial stability.

In addition to asking the entire community to take the Seraph Pledge, the foundation is coordinating numerous fundraising efforts throughout March. The premiere event, a Save the Seraphs Gala, will be held Saturday, March 21, at Shore Casino, Atlantic Highlands. Sponsored by the Mater Dei Prep PTA, Booster Club and Alumni Association, the Gala will feature dinner and an open bar and entertainment by Joe Rapolla (MD ’79) and the Perfect Square. An online gift auction will allow those who can’t attend the event an opportunity to bid on an array of remarkable items, all donated by local businesses and the Mater Dei Prep community.

Additional fundraising events in March include a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Pot of Gold Irish Night and Seraphfest, an evening of rock 'n' roll from the best of our area's up and coming bands. Many local businesses are also hosting “give-back” events throughout the month. For a complete listing of events, please visit www.savetheseraphs.org.
